New parish under the protection of Nuestra Señora de Katipanan

The 13 native priests of Nabua conducted a parish mission and house-to-house visitation last July 5-8 in barangays San Ramon, Paloyon and Bustrac in the town to prepare their kahimanwa for the opening of a new parish.

Heading the clergy from Nabua is their President, Fr. Andrew Recepcion. With the group are: Fr. Rogelio Largoza, Fr. Jabs Sabas, Fr. Leon Fajardo, Fr. Sonny Guadalupe, Fr. Danilo Trajano, Fr. Jose Cortez, Fr. Louie Occiano, Fr. Demosthenes Olaso, Fr. Albert Balderas, Fr. Jun Soto, Fr. Felix Penetrante and Fr. Jun Abinal. For four days they left their parishes and braved the rains just to prepare the faithful in these three barangays for a new parish.

The proposed parish in Paloyon will have its patroness, Our Lady of the Covenant (Nuestra Señora de Katipanan), who incidentally will also celebrate the 300th year of the devotion in Nabua come 2011.

It will be recalled that the earthquake which struck Nabua in 1711 was recorded to be one of very great intensity. It cracked the ground from the door of the church up to the foot of Mt. Sumagang. The old folks believed it was the end of the world.

The people sought refuge inside the church. Fr. Vicente Bastillo who was then the parish priest called on the people to pray to God and ask for the maternal intercession and protection of the Blessed Virgin, Nuestra Senora de la Limpia Concepcion.

Their prayers were heard. And to show their gratitude for their deliverance, the parishioners made a covenant, a “tipan” to God and to the Blessed Virgin, “Our Lady of Katipanan”.
